Sometimes the nicest places end up being the ones you expect nothing of. While on the bus to Pau this morning, I was wondering why the hell I booked two nights in a city with no mayor sights while I could have spent that time in Spain instead. However as soon as I started exploring, that mood changed completely. The sun broke through the clouds, I had the most delicious and best value lunch menu in weeks, and I just love the vibe of this city - which is very different from all the places I was before. Lonely Planet writes about Pau that it feels like a riviera town, and when I read that I remember thinking that's an absolute bullshit thing to say about the Pyrenees gateway city. But in fact, it's true. There is indeed something resorty and coastal about the palm lined lanes and fancy mansions. Only instead of water, there are mountains in the distance. The best of two worlds, if you ask me!
