A boy comes to King Arthur's court with an enchanted mantle that can not be worn by an unfaithful wife. Guinevere dons it, and so does every other lady in the court; only one can wear it, and only after she confesses to kissing her husband before their marriage. . Other boys also bring a wild boar, that can not be cut by a cuckold's knife, and a cup that a cuckold can not drink from without spilling it, and these also reveal that every wife at court has been unfaithful. Nat King Cole's voice is perfection here (in fairness, it is mostly everywhere), rich and lived-in, capturing the wistful aching of Hoagy Carmichael and Mitchell Parish's timeless song, Stardust (written in 1927 and which currently exists in over 1,500 different versions, with this being the most definitive). Opening with the most incredible, deep and ominous sounding chords, before swaying into the most lilting and longing "song about a song about love" (as author Richard M Sudhalter called it), Stardust will pick at the carefully hidden corners of your heart and leave you with the gentlest of sighs. Recorded for the 1957 Love Is The Thing (from which this EP is taken) and produced by Lee Gillette, this is Cole at his most impossibly vocally restrained and most heart-breakingly beautiful.
