In 2018, Vietnamese Americans found new political prominence. In Orange County, California, Asian-American voters are thought to have helped flip three congressional seats so that the previous Republican stronghold is now entirely represented by Democrats. And Vietnamese Americans — who have historically voted Republican by wide margins — may have contributed to this shift, according to experts. In California, at least 24 Vietnamese-Americans ran for local office in the recent mid-term elections. Read more at http://aanow.com via (@nbcasianamerica

One bikini a day; daily swimmer. Sofia by ViX bikini. My name was “chubby girl”. When I showed my Instagram photos to a Chinese woman in early 50’s, she commented several times on the fact that I was born slender, attributable to my genes. Yes, but I explained to her that at one point of my life my name was “chubby girl”. Up to a point in my teen years, I became tired of being skinny/scrawny, looking as if I came from a famine. I started to eat five pies a day. One day I visited my girlfriend who wasn’t home at that time. I didn’t leave my name with her male friend. Few hours later, she called and asked, “Did you come by today? ”Why? I didn’t leave my name,” I answered. She said that her friend told her, “A chubby girl” stopped by.My mother also warned me then that I no longer looked exquisite. That was my turning point. During those chubby girl days, my social friends continued to tell me that I looked the same. Few years later, the truth came out, “Oh, you lost weight.” I realized mother’s advice was the best. #bestadvice #healthylifestyle #healthandwellness #healthylife #swimmerlife #bestlifeadvice #swimmer #chubbygirl #asians #swimlovers #loveforswimming #rayban #eyecandy #happyanniversary #love #lovely #katespade #huffpostwoman #fashionblogger #fblogger #fitnessblogger #aanow #aapi #huffpostasianvoices #chineseamerican #fitnessmotivation #truebeautyisholistic #yutsai88 #siswimsearch
MEET THE SEADRIFT CHARACTERS Sau Van Nguyen and his brother Chinh, both Vietnamese refugees, were arrested after the fatal shooting of Seadrift fisherman Billy Joe Aplin. Mental health isn't discussed enough, among Asian-Americans. First generation Asian-American students are expected to be successful in school and have grit and a strong work ethic. In many cases, that pressure ends up being harmful. Read about one students experience at http://aanow.com via @nextshark

Check out the first half of the festival trailer for @seadriftfilm
! It’s a documentary about the 1979 fatal shooting in Seadrift, TX that ignited a resurgence of the KKK and a maelstrom of hostilities against Vietnamese refugees. Incredible story so close to home. And, it really wasn’t that long ago. Click on the link in bio for full trailer.
The response to our @seadriftfilm
documentary has been extraordinary! I’m hoping that our film not only canonizes this story for Vietnamese American and Texas history but also creates a lasting impact on how we view refugees and immigrants as a country. Please tag your Vietnamese friends and let them know about our film!
Congratulations to Tina Maharath! The 27 year old financial analyst was elected state senator of Ohio's District 3, last week. In doing so she became: - Ohio’s first Asian-American state senator. - America’s first Laotian-American state senator. - Ohio’s first Asian-American woman in the general assembly - The only democrat who flipped a seat in our senate chamber this election, after the caucus hasn’t been able to flip a seat since 2006. "Better yet, I did it as a woman without accepting ANY PAC (Political Action Committee) contributions outside of 80-20 initiatives who support bi-partisan Asian American civic engagement because it is a cause that has always been important to me." . . . #aanow #asianamerican #laoatian #aapi #pacificislander #ohio #tinamaharath
Many Asians are big gamblers. A recent study has shown that Asian-American college students have a higher rate of compulsive gambling. The study suggests that "impulsivity is not a factor in problem gambling among Asian-American students, as it is for white students. Rather, they gamble to cope with negative feelings, such as anxiety, shame, loneliness or a sense of being disconnected from the college culture or mainstream society." is fast-tracking Shang-Chi to be its first superhero movie tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist. Per @deadline
, the studio has set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who want to do something as potentially monumental as was accomplished in Marvel’s first viable Best Picture candidate, Black Panther. The goal here is to do a similar thing: introduce a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers. Excited to support @seadriftfilm
’s premiere at Slamdance Film Festival 2019. We need a little more financial help to get the feature documentary completed for January! Please help us get to the finish line for this progressive tale of racism and reconciliation. Thanks for your support! “In 1979, a young Vietnamese refugee shoots and kills a white crab fisherman at the public town docks in Seadrift, TX. What began as a dispute over fishing territory erupted into violence and ignites a maelstrom of boat burnings, KKK intimidation, and other hostilities against Vietnamese refugees along the Gulf Coast. Set during the early days of Vietnamese arrival in the U.S. Seadrift examines the circumstances that led up to the shooting and its dramatic aftermath, and reveals the unexpected consequences that continue to reverberate today.”
